Poisoning in dogs is common. Toxic baits are widely available and target everything from slugs and snails to foxes, dogs,…
Main bait toxins and products
Compound 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) on consumption, is rapidly absorbed out of the gut into the bloodstream. It is highly toxic particularly to introduced pest species.
Train your dogs to muzzle – it is the best prevention. Once signs of poisoning are apparent, the prognosis, even with treatment, is poor and the outcome is almost always lethal. If affected even dog vomit is toxic. Keep away from other dogs. Never touch baits, poisoned carcases, or vomit directly. 1080 is highly toxic to all warm-blooded animals including humans.
1080 is deployed in various ways, often injected into kangaroo meat or sausages.
FOXOFF: 1080 bait in blocks
DOGGONE: 1080 based product
RATSAK: Brodifacoum
Common household poisons
- Household cleaners
- Cannabis
- Insecticides and fertilizers
- Coolants and antifreeze
- Plants: African violet, Aloe, Mushrooms
- Foods: Chocolate, Onions, Grapes, Avocado, Xylitol (sweetener)
Prevention
Keep household cleaners and any toxic baits safely stored. Labradors and many other breeds are especially prone to poisoning as they like to explore substances through the mouth. Dogs may climb shelves to reach toxins – baits are designed to be attractive to dogs.
If you believe your dog has had contact with anything toxic, call your local emergency vet clinic immediately.
