Bait Aversion Training

The only other preventative measure we know of is to muzzle your dog.

The target baits used during training have no toxins within them (no 1080, PAPP, or Rodenticide). We use a dummy non-toxic matrix, a replica of real baits like Probait and FOXOFF, but without the 1080 or similar toxin. We also add dried roo meat as it is also often used during baiting programmes.

Annual refreshers are recommended at a different location to reinforce the initial training.

Initial training costs $390

Refresher training costs $195

Toxic baits are widely available and target everything from slugs and snails to feral foxes, dogs, and pigs.

If poisoning is suspected, you need to seek immediate veterinary attention. With some toxins early veterinary attention is highly likely to succeed with ongoing treatment. Other toxins, like 1080, the outcome is almost always fatal. In the past muzzling your dog has been the only preventative measure available.

From Research to Practice

Based on a very successful scientific research project our Bait Aversion Training replicates the methodology incorporated in the original behaviour modification trials. We use an energiser called Bait Aversion Device (BAD) that will give a correction to any dog that touches the target, with e-collar support.

In the original bait aversion study several years after initial training, 96% of dogs avoided the bait without need of a refresher correction. This BAD box training methodology has previously been approved by university ethics committees. We specialise in aversive behavioural conditioning with working and companion canines.

Based on robust scientific research project, we are happy to finally put the idea into commercial practice. We have upgraded and the made the ‘Bad Box’ training tool ready for field conditions. With added e-collar support, this training offers the best protection available other than muzzling. Bait proof your dog with our bait aversion training.

What to expect

We allow dogs to explore the target area without command or encouragement – letting their instincts kick in. This allows them the opportunity to seek out and sample all of the target baits available or to avoid them. In essence the dog learns to avoid without being ‘taught’ by a human.

We use multiple targets per session spread out over two walks. Should a dog attempt to sample a target the energiser or e-collar releases a small charge (correction) to make the encounter unpleasant- hopefully disagreeable enough to affect the aversion.

In collaboration with toxic bait manufacturers, our targets are safe, toxin free samples of common commercially used baits, 1080 and FoxOff. Your dog will learn to leave them alone. There is no guarantee, but this is the best available training option (unless you muzzle) to keep your dog safe. This is a pioneering, commercial bait aversion service developed in collaboration with Animal Ark Pty Ltd.
